Sorolla

Vision of Spain

Centro Cultural Fundación Bancaja (València), Museo de Bellas Artes (Sevilla), CAC (Málaga), Museo de Bellas Artes (Bilbao), MNAC (Barcelona). 2007

The exhibition features the fourteen mural panels that Sorolla painted between 1911 and 1919 for the Hispanic Society of America and that are exhibited for the first time outside its headquarters in New York, touring Spain for over two years in six different exhibits.

The large size of the panels is considerable- that of Castilla measures 3.5x14 m, which complicate transport and installation tasks.

In the first sample, that of Valencia in 2007, the design influenced the adjusted lighting for canvases and the dark-coloured wall, to create the images as windows looking towards the outside. There is also a colored strip on the floor that visually broadens the wall and defines the approach of the public. The distribution is geographical; and there we appreciate the differences of light in the pictures, as we move from eastern coastal regions to the north.

The assignment was to design each of the exhibit set-ups and the technical management of the whole tour.
