Josep Renau (1907-1982)

Commitment and Culture

Centre Cultural La Nau (Universitat de València). Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Madrid). CAAC (Sevilla). CAA (Las Palmas). Paraninfo de la Universidad de Zaragoza. Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco (México). 2007

The exhibition brings together over two hundred works of art, including paintings, drawings, sketches, collages and posters, as well as abundant documentary and bibliographic material (photographs, letters, journals, exhibition catalogs, books and other documents).

It is divided into four sections: Times of the Republic (1926-1931); Spain at War (1936-1939); Crossing the Ocean (1939-1958); Images beyond the wall (1958-1982).

It is always delicate using reproductions in the exhibited work; but taking into account the graphic work of Renau as a poster designer, muralist and works in the field of book publishing, the oversized replica of the original allows the technical mastery of the artist to be shown as well as causing a visual impact of his work. The adaptation, to each of the six areas where the exhibition has been set up, has resulted in six totally different layouts but which still maintain uniformity and power in the use of large-sized Renau pictures.
