Immaculate Mary

Politics and Religion in the Spanish Baroque

Museu de Belles Arts de València. November 2017

More than fifty oil paintings, sculptures, carvings and documents illustrate the debate that was created around the Immaculate Conception of Mary together with the use of these artistic works in the transformation of this debate into actual doctrine. The scenography of the exhibition highlights the dramatic quality of the pieces, the theme and the overall Baroque movement to which most of the pieces belong. The magnificent carvings and sculptures are placed on plinths of different heights in front of the oil paintings they are associated with, simulating artistic altars. A video mapping over Juan Conchillos' Immaculate Conception enlarges the background of the canvas and uses the whole wall to show details of the work and offer the spectator a different perspective of the spectacular background of the painting.
