Between land and faith

Muslims in the Christian kingdom of Valencia (1238-1609)

Centre Cultural La Nau (Universitat de València). Valencia. February 2009

On the fourth anniversary of the expulsion of the Moors from the Kingdom of Valencia, the life of Valencian Muslims at that time is shown. It is a reflection of the tension between the sense of attachment to their land and religious feeling in an intolerant society with its culture. Paintings, manuscripts and objects that reflect historical events (occurring since the conquest of King James I in the thirteenth century to the early seventeenth century expulsion) and culture, daily life and legacy of the Muslim community are presented. The exhibition discourse develops around the floor drawing of an eight-point star, taken from thirteenth century plasterwork from the Archaeological Museum of Onda.

The cabinets and central walls rise up from the star drawing reproduced on the floor and contains documents, educational panels and objects. Paintings and texts hang on the perimeter walls, narrating historical facts.
