Beyond Hollywood

American Indian Identities

Museu valencià d’etnologia. Junio 2018

The content of this exhibition is articulated around four thematic areas: Origins, Diversity, Confrontations and Responses. The exhibition aims to contrast and juxtapose the understanding that the Native American peoples hold about themselves with both western perspectives and the stereotypical vision that Hollywood has created. The structure and the opposing standpoints are reflected in the design of the exhibition, and so the showcases that contain Native American pieces are arranged opposite those that show a western vision of the Native American peoples. The furniture, conceived as rooms or closed spaces, allows the exhibition to feature pieces of different formats that, together with the graphic displays, make up the scenes of each section. The neutral colours used in the outside contrast with the striking interiors, highlighting the pre-eminence of the scenes depicted. At the end of the exhibition, the board game "Tribalopoly", which served as inspiration for the graphic displays, shows the great difficulty of achieving indigenous status these days
